BEFORE IT GOES ON THE CARD
Eleven Attempts to Charge Her Mother's Card for Something Nobody Remembered Buying. Now Four Things Have to Be True Before Anything Goes on It.

Eleven months of statements, spread across her mother's dining table.
Priya found it on a Sunday, at her mother's dining table, with eleven months of statements spread out in front of her.
One company had tried to take the same charge eleven separate times. Not eleven months of a plan, which would at least have been a plan. Eleven attempts at one charge, several of them declined, all of them for something her mother had no memory of agreeing to.
Vera is seventy nine and perfectly sharp. She had clicked something once, a long time ago, probably to read an article. Priya is fifty one and had been putting off asking to see the statements for most of a year, because asking felt like saying something she did not want to say.
Eight weeks of undoing things
That Sunday turned into eight weeks, and the supplements were the worst of it.
Not the money, although there was money. It was that every single one had arrived as a good intention and turned into something she had to dismantle. Somebody in the same thread said the quiet part out loud: "I feel this is theft. And taking advantage of their key demographic of older people."
The industry that sells health to older people and the industry that sells traps to older people turn out to share a great many customers. That is the part that makes somebody stop buying anything at all.
"The company had attempted to charge my mother's account 11 times for the $75."
What cancelling actually costs
Cancelling is not one action. It is a sequence, and every step is designed to lose you.
The pattern repeats across hundreds of these accounts. "Plus, it literally took 5 phone calls to finally get FIL's canceled and mine back on delivery." Sometimes the outcome is worse than nothing: "When I called to cancel his paper, they canceled MINE instead and still continued to charge him."
And occasionally there is no door at all. "I can't cancel it with PayPal and I can't cancel it with the company because they're not a real company so the only thing left is canceling my credit card and now that doesn't work either."
Add it up and the real price of a nine dollar monthly charge is an afternoon, a phone queue and a conversation with a bank.

Not one action. A sequence, and every step is designed to lose you.
And nobody was careless
Here is the thing Priya needed somebody to say to her, and which she eventually read from a stranger.
"If this happened to you, YOU DIDN'T MISS THAT DISCLAIMER."
Nobody missed anything. The disclosure was built to be passed over and it worked exactly as designed. Vera is not careless and Priya was not negligent for failing to audit her mother's bank account sooner. A system that only fails people who are not permanently vigilant is not a system anybody failed at.
The four questions that came out of it
What came out of those eight weeks was not a rule about never buying anything. It was four questions.
Is this one purchase or a plan wearing one, and does the page say so plainly before the money moves. Is the one time option visible beside the plan rather than three clicks underneath it. Does the price it starts at stay where it started. And when somebody wants out, how many actions is that.
Four questions, about ninety seconds, before anything goes on anybody's card. They are not about supplements. They are about whether a company has decided in advance to make leaving difficult.
The reason she wanted it had not changed
The awkward part is that the original reason did not go away.
Vera is seventy nine, she walks less than she did, and her afternoons had got shorter in the way afternoons do. Priya had wanted to put something useful in front of her for two years, and the eight weeks of cancelling had made her wary of doing anything at all.
She had something in an online basket for two months and never pressed the button. Not because of the price, but because she could not face discovering afterwards what she had actually agreed to. A company she had never dealt with had cost her a purchase she genuinely wanted to make.
That is the real damage these companies do, and it is not the money. They make the people who would have bought something sensible decide to buy nothing.
What she eventually bought, and why
What she eventually bought is a vegetable, which is about as unglamorous as this gets.
Beetroot is a natural source of dietary nitrate, and the body converts that nitrate into nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is the signal that tells the muscle in a blood vessel wall to relax. The vessel opens a little wider, and blood reaches the tissue asking for it with less work.
Chewing matters here rather than being a detail. Bacteria on the surface of the tongue take the first step in that conversion, so something chewed spends longer where the chain begins than something swallowed whole. That is the entire mechanism and it fits in a paragraph.
What to expect, and roughly when
The first fortnight is uneventful, and anybody promising otherwise should be treated the way Priya now treats everybody. Beetroot works over weeks rather than days, so the early stretch is quiet and quiet is correct.
What arrived first was not a change in Vera at all. It was that nothing had to be managed. No reminder on a Sunday, no asking whether she had taken them, no second conversation about a thing that was supposed to be a kindness. She takes two with her coffee because they taste like pomegranate berry and because they are already there.
Around the third week Vera mentioned, without being asked, that she had walked back from the shops without stopping. That is the kind of report beetroot actually produces, and it is smaller and more believable than anything on a label.
Over months it stops being a purchase and becomes a thing on the counter. The pouch gets used up, which is more than three previous attempts managed between them. Nobody had to be reminded, and nobody had to be thanked for reminding.

The part that mattered was that nothing had to be managed.
What Priya bought, and how
They are made by Nouvalor and the product is called BEETS.
Each two chew serving carries 500 mg of beetroot, 150 mg of grape seed extract, 100 mg of CoQ10 and the B vitamins that support normal energy metabolism, with every amount printed separately rather than grouped into a blend. There is no caffeine in them and no stimulant of any kind.
Now the part this page owes anybody who has read this far. There are two ways to buy it and both are shown side by side at the same step, with both prices visible at once. A one time purchase is one time and nothing recurs. The subscription is cheaper, and the order page states that the renewal price never goes up and that it can be changed or skipped at any time.
Priya bought the one time option first, because after the year she had she wanted to watch something arrive before anything repeated. That is an entirely reasonable way to start and nothing here is going to argue her out of it.
It also carries a money back guarantee that runs up to 60 days, which is roughly how long beetroot needs before it has anything to say.
What people who take them actually say
After the year I had sorting out my father's accounts I wanted to see something arrive before anything repeated. The one time option was right there next to the plan, which is the only reason I went ahead.
Everything else I ever bought for Mum turned into me asking whether she had taken it. These sit by the kettle and she takes them, and I have genuinely stopped bringing it up.
I read the panel before I bought it because I have been caught before. Each one is listed separately with the amount, which meant I only had to check it once.
I have cancelled eleven things for my parents in two years and I did not want to add a twelfth. Knowing exactly what I was agreeing to before I paid is most of why this one happened.
