THE ELEVEN MONTHS IN BETWEEN

He Has One Date Circled on the Kitchen Calendar. The Question That Changed Everything Was Not About the Date.

Why a yearly check up leaves most people eleven months with nothing to actually do, what beetroot can and cannot honestly claim, and the question a plumber asked that reframed the whole thing.

About thirty seconds between the cuff tightening and the machine deciding.

Dennis has a date circled on the kitchen calendar and he has never once circled anything else.

It is his annual medical, the one that keeps his licence valid, and he is fifty two. Last year the reading came back inside the limit but close enough to the top of it that the nurse mentioned it twice. He has driven for a living for twenty six years. Nobody in that room said anything about his health being at risk, and he was not thinking about his health anyway. He was thinking about his income.

He has eleven months until the next one. He has had this feeling for three of them, usually around two in the morning, and he has told nobody about it at all.

A worry with nowhere to go

That is the strange thing about this particular worry. It has no symptoms, no bad days and nothing to point at.

A person with a sore knee knows what to do about a sore knee. A person with a number that drifted has a date and a vague instruction, and the eleven months in between are entirely empty. So the worry does not sit anywhere useful. It sits in the small hours and it sits in the back of the drawer with the home monitor somebody bought him, which he has used four times.

Nothing hurts. That is precisely why nothing gets done.

No symptoms, no bad days, and nothing you can point at.

"It was still technically within the limits for my job but I was definitely concerned about exceeding the limit and losing my income."

What people in his position actually do

People in Dennis's position do not tend to do nothing. They tend to do a great deal, in bursts, with no way of telling whether any of it landed.

One man described his own version of this in a forum thread: "I supplemented with plant sterols, beet root w/ CoQ10, exercise and really tried to eat healthier and reduce my alcohol consumption", all of it starting in the same fortnight. Another had been at it far longer: "I've tried garlic powder, grape seeds, beet roots, etc ..I'm 43 now and have had high blood on and off since I was in my early 30s."

What those two share is not failure, it is the absence of feedback. You cannot tell whether a thing is working when the only measurement happens once a year, so everything gets abandoned at roughly week five.

He had already written beetroot off, twice

Dennis had tried beetroot twice before, and both times he concluded it did nothing.

The first attempt was capsules, which he took for about a month. He is far from alone there: "I'm about 3 weeks on beet root capsules and so far no affect on my BP either." The usual explanation is not mysterious, and another forum regular put it in one line: "Tablets do nothing as they won't contain enough nitrate."

The second attempt was juice, which he liked rather less and stopped buying by about week three.

So beetroot went on the list of things that do not work on him. It is worth noticing that this is a conclusion about two packages, and he had drawn it about a vegetable.

The question that changed the problem

The thing that changed was not a discovery. It was a reframe, and it came from his brother in law, who is a plumber rather than anybody medical.

Dennis had been talking about the appointment and the brother in law asked him a flat question. What are you actually going to say when they ask what you have been doing?

He did not have an answer. That was the moment the problem turned from a number he could not control into a question he could. He could not promise anybody what the machine would read in June. He could absolutely decide what he would have been doing every morning until then.

One ring in red, and eleven months of empty squares underneath it.

What the beetroot is actually doing

Beetroot is a natural source of something called dietary nitrate, and the body converts that nitrate into nitric oxide.

Nitric oxide is the signal that tells the muscle in a blood vessel wall to relax. When that muscle relaxes the vessel opens a little wider, and blood reaches the tissue asking for it with less work. That is the entire mechanism and it takes one paragraph, which is about the most honest thing that can be said for it.

It is not dramatic, it has been studied for twenty years, and it is a very long way from a cure for anything. It is a vegetable doing a small specific job, every day, in the background.

What the research says, said carefully

The ingredient research here is real and it is worth reading precisely rather than hopefully.

Grape seed extract is the most studied thing in these chews. Pooling sixteen randomised trials across 810 people, researchers found it lowered systolic pressure by around six points and diastolic by nearly three, at doses running from 100 mg up to 800 mg. Pooling sixteen trials of dietary nitrate, researchers found an average fall of around four points in systolic pressure.

What to expect, and roughly when

The first fortnight is uneventful, and anybody promising otherwise should be ignored on principle. Beetroot works over weeks rather than days, so the early stretch is quiet and quiet is correct.

What arrives first is not a feeling and it is not a reading. It is a row of ticks on a calendar and a pouch that is nearly empty, which sounds trivial until you have spent three years starting things in January. By week six he had done something on fifty eight mornings out of sixty, which is more consecutive effort than any of his previous attempts had managed in total.

Over months it stops being a project and becomes furniture. Circulation is not a thing anybody fixes once, it is a thing they keep, and keeping it is dull work that only happens when it is easy. With the delicious Beets soft chew, you start to look forward to your daily batch of two chews.

The part Dennis had not expected is what it did to the eleven months rather than to the appointment. The circled date stopped running his year. It is still in the calendar, and he is no longer worried when the cuff tightens, because he knows he has done a good job following a routine that would do great for his heart health.

A hand adding another tick to a wall calendar already full of them

Fifty eight mornings out of sixty, which is more than every previous attempt put together.

What Dennis does now

Two chews with the first coffee, which is the whole of it.

They are made by Nouvalor and the product is called BEETS. Each two chew serving carries 500 mg of beetroot, 150 mg of grape seed extract, 100 mg of CoQ10 and the B vitamins that support normal energy metabolism, with every amount printed on the pouch rather than hidden inside a blend. There is no caffeine in them and no stimulant of any kind.

The claim here is deliberately small. Not that this replaces anything a doctor has prescribed, because it does not and nothing on this page suggests it should. Not that it guarantees a reading, because nobody can. Only that circulation is one part of this that a person can act on daily, that the amounts are printed so every one of them can be checked, and that two chews beside a coffee is a plan that survives February.

They also carry a money back guarantee that runs up to 60 days, which is roughly how long beetroot needs before it has anything to say.

What people who take them actually say

I used to start thinking about the appointment weeks out and I could not have told you why. Now it is a morning in the diary like any other, because I have actually been doing something in between.

I have been sold enough blends to know to turn a pouch over before anything else. Every amount is printed separately here, which is the only reason this one came home with me.

Estelle V.VERIFIED BUYER

Every heart plan I have ever started was dead by February, usually because it asked too much of a Tuesday morning. Two chews beside the coffee is the first one that is still going.

Nathan H.VERIFIED BUYER

What I wanted was something I could point at and say I did that, every day, without exaggerating what it was. This is about the only thing I have bought that does not oversell itself.
